Black Elk: Part 2 of 2

Part 2 of 2

This project covers the creation of the Oglala Lakota Medicine Man: Black Elk.

Black Elk was a commission taken on while filming the advanced series. I decided to document the carving since the headdress and jewelry pose a challenge not yet covered in Fundamentals of Woodcarving.

A word of warning, this project is faster paced than the others. Contrary to what one might think, these more advanced videos don't include too many more tools than the other videos. The advanced carver knows how to use the tools available to him to make magical things happen. Keep a close eye on the use of the 25mm #4 as it is one of the most useful tools in my arsenal.

Tools:

If you do not have the same tools, remember you do not have to have the exact same sizes-- just within the same size range. For example a #4 25mm can be replaced with a #2 or #3 in a similar width.

  • #4 -25mm (gouge)

  • #11 -4mm (veiner)

  • #9 -6mm (gouge)

  • #9 -16mm (gouge)

  • #47 -4mm (v-tool)

  • 1-1.25” bench or detail knife

  • #10-3mm (veiner)

  • #11-2mm (veiner)

  • 220 and 320 grit sandpaper
