Alabaster Trillium

$699.00

I took my first trip to Alabaster, Michigan with my brother in 2016 without a single clue what alabaster even looked like. We had hand written directions from an artist I met at an art show the previous summer. After spending quite a while in the summer sun driving and searching, my brother and I ultimately failed to find anything resembling alabaster and turned around to head back home. Not too far into the journey home I spotted a very oddly shaped pearl-like hill off of a side road by an abandoned gypsum quarry. Of course, my brother and I pulled over and walked towards the hill. As we walked we noticed the ground was made of a very strange blue stone that could only have been alabaster. We both erupted into laughter.

The stone used to carve this giant blue trillium is from one of those handful of trips I took up north to collect. This blue stone can be challenging to work because of its fault lines and inconsistencies, but it is unlike any material on earth and I’ve had so much fun over the years carving it. The trillium flower is one of my favorites to find in the woods on hikes in the late spring and this giant stone version of the tiny flower is a permanent tribute to the fleeting beauty of trillium.

Original, one of a kind piece.
