Youth is Like a Flower
I don’t always go into a carving with a strong vision or sense of what I want to convey. But In this carving, I did. I knew I wanted to capture a candid pose of a young woman looking off into the sky with a sort of childlike innocence. For some reason it reminds me of a character that might show up in a short story by Flannery O’Conner, Harper Lee, or some other southern Gothic novel.
This carving is also an important mark in my carving journey, as it is the first time I’ve resisted the urge to use sandpaper on a female carving. I didn't use sandpaper on the face at all and I love the story that the cut marks on her face tell.
